Optimized Protection for Cryogenic Systems

Smart Protection for Cryogenic Systems

Automatic Low-Temperature Shutoff — No Power Required

This temperature-controlled, pneumatic two-way valve opens automatically as fluid temperature approaches the device setpoint—no power required.

The LTAP Series is built for cryogenic systems where low temperature protection is critical. It is used when the vaporizer on the system can be overwhelmed for any reason—abnormally high draw rates, extremely cold ambient conditions, or operational imbalance.

When the fluid media reaches the device’s setpoint temperature, the integral valve activates. Used in combination with a pilot-operated regulator and orifice fitting, the LTAP will consistently and accurately shut down the system at a critical low temperature and automatically resume system functionality once the temperature rises.

“There was growing demand from major players in the industry for a more reliable solution. The existing design wasn’t cutting it—we knew we could do better.
By borrowing concepts from refrigeration, we developed a low-temperature activation device that performs where others fail. That’s what made this design stand apart.”

— Tim Knapp, Vice President of Engineering, Generant Company, Inc.

Where It’s Used

The LTAP Series Low Temperature Actuation Probe is commonly installed in cryogenic delivery and storage systems, especially where vaporizer limitations or sudden demand spikes can lead to dangerously low temperatures. Its function is purely mechanical, making it ideal for remote or power-sensitive environments.

How It Works

At the core of the LTAP is a pressurized copper sensing probe. As fluid temperature drops to the setpoint, the gas inside the probe contracts, triggering a rapid mechanical response in the control head. The valve opens within 3°F of the activation point, allowing pressure relief or flow redirection—without requiring electrical input, programming, or user intervention.

Generant Featured on Ratermann’s High Pressure Podcast

Generant was recently invited to join Ratermann Manufacturing on their High Pressure Podcast to discuss the development of the LTAP device. It was a great conversation about collaboration, innovation, and the process behind creating a solution built for the industry’s evolving needs. Check out the podcast and Ratermann’s Complete Guide to the LTAP in the Resources below.

“Cryogenic systems can pose serious risks when things go wrong! These issues can quickly lead to dangerous situations for both personnel and equipment. By stopping problems before they escalate, the LTAP avoids life-threatening situations. We have had major success in the field with the LTAP, it has been extensively tested and validated, making it one of the most accurate and reliable safety devices for cryogenic systems. Our customers are switching to the LTAP to lower their exposure to failures in the field.”

Key Features

**Accurate and Reliable**
Setpoint tolerance is within ±3°F, with full valve opening occurring within 3°F of the initial actuation.

**Fast Response**
The control head opens quickly once the setpoint is reached—ideal for sensitive systems.

**Built for Oxygen Service**
Assembled and cleaned for oxygen service as standard.

**Durable Construction**
Brass body and stainless components rated to 600 PSIG, with an exposed fluid temperature range of -320°F to +150°F.

Installation Notes

LTAPs are typically installed alongside a back pressure regulator and orifice fitting, controlling dome-load pressure on a pilot-operated reducing regulator. Probes are preset at the factory and require no calibration or adjustment in the field.

Summary

For engineers managing cryogenic systems, the LTAP Series offers a dependable, passive solution for low-temperature shutoff—without electronics or control wiring. Its fast response and rugged design help safeguard system performance and protect end users, even in extreme conditions.
